RICHARD W. MILLAR, JR.'s undergraduate studies include Polytechnic School, Pasadena, Deerfield Academy, Deerfield, Massachusetts, and Occidental College, Los Angeles. He obtained his law degree from the University of San Francisco School of Law and was on the Moot Court Board and Law Review.
Prior to the formation of Millar, Hodges & Bemis, Mr. Millar was a Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney and then an attorney with the former of Iverson & Hogoboom (now Iverson, Yoaum, Papiano & Hatch).
Mr. Millar is a member of the State Bar of California, the Orange County Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. On the local level, he is a founding member and past chairman of the Business Litigation Section of the Orange County Bar, a member of the Real Estate and Appellate Sections and served three terms as Chairman of the Judiciary Committee which investigates and reviews applications for judicial appointment to the Municipal, Superior, and Appellate court districts in Orange County. He served as President of the Orange County Bar Association in 2002. On a national level, he is active in the Litigation Section of the American Bar Association and is a member of the Trial Practice Committee of that Section. He has also contributed to the Trial Practice Newsletter for several years. Since 1990, he has served as an Orange County Bar Association's Delegate to the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association.
Mr. Millar has been a lecturer and panelist on several Continuing Education of the Bar programs relating to various aspects of trial practice and has participated in the Orange County Bar's College of Trial Advocacy. He has also served as a Judge Pro Tem and an arbitrator for the Orange County Superior Court for several years.
KENNETH R. HODGES graduated with honors in Political Science from Whittier College in 1962. He attended UCLA Law School.
Prior to the formation of Millar, Hodges & Bemis, Mr. Hodges was an attorney with Hanna & Morton and was privileged to be involved in major business litigation cases, several of which resulted in written opinions from the California Court of Appeals. In addition, Mr. Hodges was co-author of Title 16 of the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Institute, Law of Coal Leases, Annual Supplement for a period of three years.
Mr. Hodges handles real estate and business litigation cases, as well as real estate and business transactions. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the California Bar Association and the Orange County Bar Association. He is a member of various sections of those associations including the business litigation and real estate sections of the state and local bar associations. He also serves on the Judiciary Committee of the Orange County Bar Association.
LARRY R. BEMIS attended the University of Southern California where he graduated with a B.S. majoring in accounting. Thereafter, he attended Southwestern University Law School in Los Angeles, California, where he graduated cum laude in the top 8% of his law school class. At Southwestern University Law School, he was a member of the Law Review and authored two articles on the subject of taxation, one of which was cited by the United States Supreme Court.
Prior to Millar, Hodges & Bemis, Mr. Bemis was a Revenue Agent with the Internal Revenue Service in Los Angeles where he audited large individual, corporate, and partnership tax returns. While employed with the Internal Revenue Service, he was promoted to the position of Appellate Conferee (now called Appeals Officer) with the Appellate Division of the Regional Commissioner's Office in Los Angeles, where he handled disputed income and estate tax appeals, prior to leaving the Internal Revenue Service to go into private practice. He was the youngest Appellate Conferee to ever be selected for that position in the entire Western Region.
Mr. Bemis has been a lecturer and speaker at Continuing Education of the Bar (CEB) programs on taxation as well as various other seminars. Mr. Bemis is a member of the Tax and Probate Sections of the Orange County and California Bar Association.
STEPHEN R. BEMIS graduated from the University of California at Davis with a B.A. in Economics and received his law degree from the Pepperdine University School of Law where he graduated with honors.
Mr. Bemis practices primarily in the areas of estate planning, probate, trust administration, trust litigation, and corporate and business organization. Mr. Bemis is a member of the Estate and Trust Sections of the Orange County and California Bar Associations.
